As one of the most popular products in the aesthetic enhancement industry over the last 20 years, Botox® is one of the most effective methods for treating wrinkles and expression lines. Botox® injections act as a temporary nerve blocker to weaken the contraction of muscles and smooth away fine lines & wrinkles.
Unlike other injectable treatment methods, Botox® is classified as a neuromodulator – using the active ingredient Botulinum toxin-A. This neurotoxic protein is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It prevents the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine from within the endings of our muscles and causes paralysis, similar to the disease botulism.
How Are Wrinkles Caused?
Wrinkles can be caused for a variety of reasons, mainly as a result of aging, over time. Our emotions direct nerve impulses to the muscles in our face, causing them to contract and make different facial expressions. Over time, as these contractions repeatedly occur, they cause the skin to thin out in certain places and cause wrinkles and expression lines to appear.
Where are Wrinkles Most Common?
These expression lines and wrinkles occur quite frequently across areas along the face, most commonly the forehead, mouth, and on the outer edges of the nose. Considering that these are the most expressive areas of the face.
How Does Botox® Work?
Botox® is an injectable neuromodulator solution, that works by causing temporary paralysis to the muscles in the face. By temporarily paralyzing these muscles that cause these expression lines, the skin is allowed to flatten out. And with time, and good skin care habits, the facial folds will fade and the expression wrinkles you target will disappear.

Is Botox® Painful?
Botox® is non-invasive and is simply administered in a small shot. The discomfort is minimal and fairly brief. If you’d like we can numb the area with a small amount of anesthetic, but that’s generally unnecessary.
Side Effects & Downtime
Side effects are minimal and can vary patient to patient. In some instances, some patients will experience light redness and minor swelling – but these issues will usually subside within a few hours or so.
Botox® Results
One of the best things about Botox® is that results can be seen almost instantly, and they will often peak around 24-48 hours after administration. Depending upon the level of correction and your dosage, Botox® must be repeated anywhere from 4-12 months to maintain similar results. Over time, after repeated sessions patients will generally experience more permanent results. To find out if Botox® is right for you, contact New York Aesthetics today.
